Wintty 1.0.0-rc.8 release notes

Released 8 October 2026All releasesDownloadBuilt from wintty 527853f

The settings window opens by default, WSL panes show their prompt, an Animations setting turns motion off, and new windows start in the right folder.

Highlights

  • All editions: Opening the configuration now opens the settings window instead of the text file. It sizes itself to your display, opens on the monitor you were using, and comes back if it was minimized. Settings you edit by hand in the file are picked up without stale controls undoing them.
  • All editions: An Animations setting in Appearance offers Follow system, Reduced or Off. Pane splits ease in, closing panes ease out, and tab-strip fades follow the same switch. Off gives an instant shell.
  • All editions: Fixes WSL profile loading on some systems that prevented the prompt from appearing.
  • All editions: A WSL pane with no folder set opens in your Linux home instead of under /mnt/c.
  • All editions: A window opened from the taskbar, a jump list or a second launch no longer starts in the install folder. A launch hands its pane the caller's folder only when it carries -e.
  • All editions: Changing the theme now repaints idle panes too, not only the window chrome.
  • Pro: The Animations setting now also covers Pro's focus and split animations.
  • Pro and Pro Legacy: A pane that loses its session now shows a hint with Retry or Reattach instead of silently dropping keystrokes, and a retried pane no longer drops or doubles what you type.

Fixes

  • All editions: Ctrl+Shift+T opens a new tab again. Reopen closed tab moved to Ctrl+Shift+D.
  • All editions: -e cmd.exe /c scripts run instead of exiting with an error.
  • All editions: Restored windows keep renamed tabs, pins, groups and folders. Signing out, restarting or a Windows Update restart saves your session first.
  • All editions: The quick terminal hides when you close its last tab and returns with a fresh one. Clicking the X on a background vertical tab no longer leaves the keyboard dead until you click a pane.
  • All editions: Closing a tab no longer freezes the window while a neighbouring pane is busy.
  • All editions: Resizing the window no longer flashes a black band, and the selected tab keeps its highlight after a tab is moved or shown again.
  • All editions: Unselected tab titles are easier to read on light and translucent backgrounds.
  • All editions: A program that sets a title now changes its own tab, not the active one. Titles with hidden control characters are ignored.
  • All editions: Shifted keys such as : and capital letters reach Neovim and other programs that use the kitty keyboard protocol correctly.
  • All editions: A nushell pane no longer freezes, and images shown in quick succession no longer disappear.
  • All editions: Saving the configuration in an editor no longer briefly resets your settings, and a pane that waits after its command keeps waiting when the configuration reloads.
  • All editions: The toast shown when a command exits names the command.
  • All editions: Launching a .bat or .cmd file with & or other special characters in its arguments no longer runs the extra text as a command. Arguments with % or ! are refused.
  • All editions: In Settings, the Raw Editor asks before discarding unsaved text, a theme set on two lines uses the last one, the keybinding list stays where you scrolled, pickers apply only when you choose, and a profile's icon choice survives a reload.
  • All editions: Updating from more than one release behind downloads one full package, and the progress bar no longer stalls near the end.
  • All editions: gpu.log, the crash log and the rolling log now start with a line naming the exact build and edition, and gpu.log keeps the previous launch as gpu.prev.log.
  • All editions: The bundled console host is updated, which fixes crashes on crafted Sixel images and corrupted soft fonts.
  • All editions: Stability improvements in window resizing, title updates, theme switching and settings.
  • Pro and Pro Legacy: Choosing Sessions in the command palette opens the sessions picker instead of doing nothing.
  • Pro and Pro Legacy: Panes opened by splitting no longer stay blank in a persistent session. Panes opened at the same time no longer kick each other off their sessions, and a new tab no longer picks up a closed tab's old session.
  • Pro and Pro Legacy: A profile that runs a program, such as wsl -d <distro>, runs it in a persistent session instead of landing on a bare prompt.
