Wintty licence summary

The paid editions of Wintty are licensed under the Wintty Paid Editions End User License Agreement (EULA), version 1.1, effective 2026-08-27. The full text is the contract and it lives at https://api.wintty.io/legal/eula. This page is a summary in plain words. It does not change the licence, and where the two differ, the licence governs.

What the licence is

A licence, not a sale: it is personal to you, it cannot be transferred or passed on, and it lasts as long as your entitlement. You accept it when you first sign in to, activate, install or use a paid edition. Ship Digital and its licensors keep ownership of the proprietary parts.

How long it lasts

As long as the entitlement. A Pro sponsorship covers 365 days from the day you sponsor. A Sponsor-tier sponsorship lasts while it stays active. An Enterprise entitlement runs for the term in its order form, one year by default, and is not perpetual.

Who may use it

One person. You may install and use the paid edition on up to three devices that you personally own or control, and only you may use it. The software counts devices: you can free a device slot yourself when you reach the limit, a device you have not used for a while frees its slot by itself, and you can ask us to release one you can no longer reach. Use by or for an organisation, or deployment across a fleet, is not covered by a personal licence; that is Pro Enterprise, licensed per seat.

What stays open source

Wintty includes open-source components, including the Ghostty code it builds on. Those components stay under their own open-source licences, and where the licence and an open-source licence conflict for a component, the open-source licence controls for that component. The free open-source edition is not a paid edition and sits outside the EULA entirely.

What you may not do

Give the paid builds or their proprietary parts to anyone else, remove proprietary notices, build a competing product by copying the proprietary components, share your account, sign-in, licence or activation data with anyone, or activate more devices or seats than your entitlement covers.

What you may always do

The licence does not restrict what the law lets you do. In the UK, your rights to make a back-up copy, to decompile for interoperability, and to study and test the program under sections 50A, 50B and 50BA of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 are yours whether or not the licence mentions them, and equivalent law applies elsewhere. If you need interoperability information, ask us at [email protected] first: we can usually supply it faster than you can derive it, and asking is a request, not a condition.

Signing in and offline use

Paid editions verify your entitlement with a GitHub sign-in that lasts 30 days and renews itself in the background. An activated device works offline; after 30 days without contact it shows a reminder you can dismiss, and it keeps working. If your sign-in lapses, you sign in again to continue. Enterprise editions can activate fully offline with a signed activation file deployed by your administrators.

Updates and support

While your entitlement is active you receive updates through the built-in updater, and updates may add, change or remove features. Support reaches us at [email protected]. When an entitlement ends, updates stop and the app asks you to sign in again before it will continue.

Refunds and cancellation

There is no blanket no-refunds rule. Payments through GitHub Sponsors cannot be refunded through GitHub itself, so we arrange refunds directly. Consumers keep their statutory rights, including a 14-day right to change your mind. The refund policy has the detail.

Enforcement and your say

If we reasonably determine that the licence has been breached, most often by licence sharing, we may suspend or revoke it. A person makes that decision, never an automatic system. The app shows a notice saying why and stops being usable until the matter is resolved. If you think the decision is wrong, tell us and we will review it, and if a refund is due it is arranged.

Privacy

The licence lets us process limited data to verify entitlements, deliver updates and detect licence sharing. What we hold, how long we keep it and the legal bases are in the privacy notice.

Warranties, liability and your statutory rights

If you are a consumer in the UK or the EU, your statutory rights come first and nothing in the licence limits them. Beyond that, the paid editions are provided as is, with other warranties disclaimed to the extent the law allows, and total liability is capped at the amount you paid for the entitlement in the twelve months before the event. Nothing limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Changes and the law

The licence may be updated; it carries a version and an effective date so you can check which one you are reading. Where a change materially affects your rights, we will take reasonable steps to tell you, for example in the app; continued use after a change takes effect counts as acceptance, and no change reaches back to a dispute that had already arisen. The licence is governed by the laws of England and Wales. Consumers living elsewhere keep the mandatory consumer protections of the place they live and, where the law provides, the right to bring proceedings there.
