Wintty 1.0.0-rc.1 release notes

Highlights

• This is the first release, so there is nothing to update from: you install it from the download page, on the tip channel, the early-build channel for sponsors, and later releases reach you as updates from here. The binaries are signed by Ship Digital Ltd, and Add/Remove Programs names the same publisher.
• Your settings, sign-in, logs and update channel live outside the install directory, so updating or reinstalling no longer deletes them. In Pro and Pro Legacy, your sessions live through an update: the programs inside them keep running.
• In every build, a window frozen for 20 seconds writes a crash report, and the next launch explains the hang. In the DirectX 12 builds (Sponsor and Pro), the app tells you when it stops drawing, gives up on a graphics device that will not stay up, and recovers after a display driver reset.
• Idle terminals cost less memory: inactive tabs are compressed into snapshots, idle scrollback sheds memory, and nothing repaints when nothing changed.
• Tabs gained groups you can drag together, a pinned zone with its own icon band, and an idle clock.
• Inputs are hardened: oversized images are rejected, links open only allow-listed URL schemes, and file URLs reported by a remote host are refused.

Fixes

• Pro Legacy no longer crashes at launch.
• Installing or updating the Sponsor edition no longer fails while another Wintty edition is running, and uninstalling one edition no longer deletes every edition's crash reports.
• A window no longer hangs when a pane closes.
• The sessions picker answers the keyboard: arrow keys move the selection, and Enter opens the selected session instead of running whichever command was ranked first.
• Machines whose graphics hardware is too old for the DirectX 12 build are turned away at startup with an explanation, instead of failing later. Pro Legacy is the build for those machines.
• Pro Legacy no longer recommends itself when you are already in a Remote Desktop session.
• Fixes for High Contrast rendering, the theme browser's palette, and a memory leak when opening a terminal fails.
• Stability improvements in the quick terminal switcher, rendering, read-aloud settings and Pro Legacy's font handling.

Known issues

Warning

• To take an update, use the update popover inside the app; the buttons on the update toasts do not act yet.
• If the update to rc.2 fails, sign in on the download page and install it the same way you installed rc.1.
• A hard crash can leave no crash report. If the window vanishes with nothing written, say so when you report it.
• The Start menu's All apps entry can show a small, upscaled icon; the Desktop and Start menu shortcuts carry the proper icon.
• Uninstalling leaves the folder holding your settings, sign-in, logs and update channel behind; delete it yourself if you want it gone.
